Baleen Tower is a project that sets out to challenge the status quo, by establishing a local identity while simultaneously intervening with the ever-growing urban development. Located at the heart of Ulsan within the Nam-gu region, the site offers the possibility for a new landmark building. It neighbors two contrasting developments - a low-rise office building on the left, and a high-rise residential tower on the right. The design is planned strategically in response to the mass and facade of the existing buildings. The mass, maximizing the full capacity of the given area, is raised to 12 stores high in compliance with Ulsan and Korea building regulations. The project also incorporates a unique second-skin in its facade. Taken inspirations from one of the most recognized symbols of the city, Whale's baleen is patterned and projected onto the UPC panels. Panels of 3M high segments are arrayed vertically then assembled through the embed bracket system to the outer skin. The panels were mass-produced to keep the cost low, yet its versatile quality allowed for customizations through free forming.

Baleen Tower는 지속적으로 성장하고 있는 도시 개발과 지역의 정체성을 동시에 확보하려 도전한 프로젝트이다. 울산의 중심부에 위치한 이 부지는 새로운 랜드마크 빌딩의 가능성을 제시한다. 사이트의 왼쪽에는 낮은 층의 사무실 건물들이 오른쪽에는 주거용 오피스텔이 배치되어 있기 때문에 서로 상반된 개발 지역이 인접해 있다. 설계는 기존의 매스와 파사드에 따라 전략적으로 디자인이 계획되었다.
건축법규를 준수하여 주어진 면적의 최대 수용력을 극대화한 매스를 12개 점포 높이로 올렸다. 이 프로젝트는 또한 외관에 독특한 이중 외피를 적용했다. 도시의 가장 유명한 상징 중 하나인 고래의 지느러미에서 영감을 받아 고래의 지느러미를 패턴화하여 UHPC 패널에 투영된다. 3M 높이의 분절된 패별은 수직으로 배열된 다음 bracket system을 통해 외부 스킨에 조립된다. 패널을 대량 생산하여 비용을 낮추면서도 다양한 품질로 자유 성형으로 커스터마이징이 가능하도록 했다.
